Double-clicking in a box while the pointer tool is selected changes to text entry mode.

Clicking outside of all boxes after editing text changes back to pointer mode.

Holding down the command key while clicking with the pointer tool selected works like selecting the box drawing tool and clicking.  This way, you can draw new boxes without having to select the box drawing tool from the palette.
